    Study Tour of Istanbul

This is compulsory for all students enrolled in the interdisciplinary MAs and available to other students as places are available. It will normally last between five and seven days and in the first instance be led by Mr Crow and Dr James. It is expected that a maximum of fourteen students will participate and it is hoped to be able to see some of the more obscure structures such as the base of the column of Arcadius and the Fildami reservoir as well as the major sites, such as St Sophia, the Land Walls and the Archaeological Museums. On an excursion outside the city students will visit the major monuments in Thrace including the Byzantine aqueducts, the Anastasian Wall and the rock monastery at Kiyikoy.

The second visit took place in April 2003 led by James Crow of Newcastle and Dr Liz James of Sussex. Three Centre Fellows and students from each institution took part. The tour served to introduce students to Constantinople, from the angles of archaeology, art history, and literature.
