— Byzantine Archaeology, in particular the Anastasian Wall Project and the study of the fortifications and watersupply in the hinterland of Constantinople http://longwalls.ncl.ac.uk
— Roman Frontiers, in particular the late Roman frontier in NE Anatolia and the Balkans
— Hadrian's Wall and its outpost forts.

Areas of Research Supervision
— Byzantine archaeology, especially the transformation of urbanism and the role of fortifications in early Byzantine society.
— Frontiers and native populations in Roman Britain, the lower Danube and the East.
— Upland archaeology of Northern England until 1700.
