Mark completed his PhD at Newcastle in 2001 based on the excavations of the Byzantine levels at Kilise Tepe, Turkey. He gained an MA entitled 'Methods in Byzantine archaeology' from Newcastle in 1996. He is currently collaborating with the University of Sydney at excavations in Cyprus. His research interests include Mediterranean field survey; rural settlement; Late Roman and Byzantine ceramics and early Byzantine pilgrimage centres.

In his role as AHRB Centre Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Byzantine Archaeology, Mark teaches undergraduates and postgraduates both at the Institute of Byzantine Studies and at the School of Historical Studies, University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
